Chapter 19

Sean arrives home from work and greets me with a quizzical expression on his face. “A reliquary worth nearly three quarters of a million bucks? That’s what you sold for five bucks?”

I plop down at the kitchen table and cradle my head in my hands. “So, you heard.”

“I heard from a dozen other cops. Why didn’t you tell me this morning?”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to worry you when there was nothing you could do to help. I know more now.” While Sean and I work on making dinner, I tell him everything I know about the reliquary sale, ending with, “And Ty can’t remember who he sold it to. But I’m sure the person who bought it came to the sale looking for it. No random estate sale customer could recognize something so obscure and get it auctioned off at Christie’s so quickly. I’m going to find out who it was so I can salvage my reputation.”

Sean frowns as he dumps a bag of salad greens into a bowl. I’m not sure if he’s displeased by the number of wilted leaves or by my latest investigative plan. “What does Mrs. Dupree have to say? How can it be your fault if she had no idea her tenant possessed something so valuable?”

“I doubt Katherine blames me.” Then I take a deep breath and tell Sean about Katherine’s request that we “discover” money that she could give to Jeff’s kids.

He stops shaking the salad dressing and slowly sets the bottle on the counter, his eyes wide with incredulity. “Seriously? You agreed to a stunt like that?”

“It seemed harmless enough.” I turn to place the silverware on the table so I can avoid Sean’s gaze. “She wouldn’t have given us the job if we didn’t agree to help her out in channeling some cash to the Singleterrys.”

Sean tosses the salad with brutal vigor. Before he can reproach me, I pull the salad bowl away and put it on the table. “I have a meeting with Celeste Dupree tomorrow morning. I’ll explain everything and hopefully she’ll have some ideas on how to proceed.” I pat Sean’s chair. “Now, sit down and tell me the latest on your brother.”

There’s nothing like Coughlin family drama to divert the heat away from me. Sean launches into a long tale of woe about how Terry is in really deep doo-doo because the guy whose wallet he lifted is a lawyer with a big firm in Newark. “He’s pressuring the district attorney to charge Terry with the highest felony charges.” Sean arches his back until it cracks. “Meanwhile I’m trying to use all my contacts to get the DA to reduce the charges. But what my family doesn’t understand is that if I push too hard, it could backfire. The DA doesn’t want to look like he caves in to the demands of the police when the accused has connections on the force.” He gazes up at the ceiling. “I honestly don’t know where his case will land.
